Sam Smith was a beloved pioneer to the Las Vegas community. As a community leader he had a passion for spelling and arithmetic. He was the owner of the then only black owned book store called the Native Son Bookstore, people from all walks of life would visit his store from businessmen and politician to community leader and homeless. Sam Smith was a beloved pioneer to the Las Vegas community. As a community leader he had a passion for spelling and arithmetic. He was the owner of the then only black owned book store called the Native Son Bookstore, people from all walks of life would visit his store from businessmen and politician to community leader and homeless. He loved challenging anyone to do better individual.
Before his untimely death he challenged a man named Devin Brooks to start a spelling bee. He insisted that intercity youth needed an outlet to be encouraged to spell and to be recognized for there intellectual abilities. shortly after his passing Devin Brooks carried out his wishes and the Native Son Spelling bee has carried his mission ever since.
We have decided to focus on third and fourth grade students. The school to prison pipeline has been a daunting, continuous realty for so many of our minority youth in our city and across the nation.

Our goal is to combat these statistics by intergrading our social and finical efforts into our children and giving them an outlet of inspiration and motivation, other than athletics or entertainment.
We rewards our champions with gifts such as trophies, proclamation and cash prizes. This is a way to show our children how much they mean to us. We fight everyday to see our children have a brighter tomorrow
Many of our donation, sponsorship and volunteers are people from the community that the majority of these children come from. local business people, teachers and community activist all play a crucial part in making the Native Son Spelling Bee possible.
